Sold new in Germany in 1971 as a 300 SEL 3.5, this car went to the United States after a couple of years and stayed there for most of its life, always garaged and carefully kept. To meet US emission rules it was later fitted with the 4.5-litre V8 from the same W109 family — the engine the American-market cars left the factory with — and that is what it runs today, smoothly and quietly.
What sets it apart is what has not been done to it. Almost every 300 SEL you find has had heavy rust and a full restoration. This one has never been restored and never welded underneath; the floors and structure are original. The dark brown paint is a high-quality respray from about twenty-five years ago in the US and still looks superb. It runs and drives very nicely.
Inside, the burled wood dash, VDO instruments and original German km/h cluster are all in place. The front seats were retrimmed in new leather in the tan-and-brown tone of the interior; the original front seats are included and in good condition too. The odometer reads 58,814 km.
Back in Europe, the car is registered in Germany on historic (H) plates. It is offered simply because the owner has no use for it in Mallorca.
